  1. GENERAL

City Meet runs all day Thursday July 6th, Friday July 7th and through Saturday July 8th, followed by a Cardinal celebration back at the pool on Saturday night for ALL members of the team (not just those at City Meet) starting at 8pm.  They will be putting additional information and eventually results out on the CSA website here Community Swim Association Greensboro – CITY MEET (greensborocsa.org)

We hope as many swimmers as possible will attend (compare it to an end of season tournament with any other sport).  Not only is the event exciting and fun for our swimmers, many swimmers have some of their best times during this event.  It’s also important to understand that the Cardinal team gets points for many swimmers that participate, not just those that go to finals so the more swimmers we have, the more impact on our score.  This is true of swimmers of all ages and levels.  The team score then drives our swim team ranking in the community.  It can hurt the team if a swimmer pulls out after the final entries are submitted next weekend (a relay can’t swim, not enough swimmers in an event, etc.).

  • Swimmers can only swim at City Meet if they have participated in a regular season meet – the same rules apply, no more than 3 individual events and 2 relays
  • City Meet has a “competition” track (called Championship) and an open track. Swimmers can swim different events in different tracks but not the same event in both.  There are a maximum number of swimmers allowed per team in each event in Championship so additional swimmers in an event may swim in the open track.
  • The pool is setup for yards (ours is meters) so times will be converted for the meet by the software
  • Remind your 13+ swimmers they need to get themselves to the on deck clerk of course for their events
  • Coaches will send out an email each day with who needs to come back in the evenings
  • Heat Sheets – This year heat sheets/meet programs will be available in hard copy ONLY. You can purchase 1 of 2 ways; cash or Venmo at the Information Booth (which we staff). Upon arrival at the GAC, you will select the line for either cash or Venmo. If pre-paying by Venmo, please indicate in the memo line the number of programs and the “receipt” page ready to show the person at the information table. The Venmo address is @CSA-Greensboro – We want to encourage people to pay this way as it will cut down on the amount of cash that has to be handled and quickly, it will make the line to purchase these go faster. Heat sheets can be pre-purchased with venmo. They are $5 each session.  Highlighters will also be for sale at $1 each.

City Meet Themes – Every year the coaches pick different themes for each session to help with team spirit

  • Thursday AM/afternoon – Cardinal spirit (wear your red team shirts and we will have some Cardinal temporary tattoos in our tent area).
  • Thursday PM – Add your rally caps (ball caps worn backwards)!!
  • Friday AM – Jersey Day – wear your favorite sports jersey or tee
  • Friday PM – Cardinal tee & rally cap
  • Saturday AM – come in your pj’s
  • Saturday PM – City Meet Parade – “HAWAII FIVE-O” / Hawaiian/Luau theme

For morning sessions, the scoreboard end will be boys and dive well end will be girls with the exception being 8&U – all 25’s will swim in the Dive well side of the pool.  The morning sessions for championship are qualifying heats with the top 3 heats of swimmers going through to finals in the evening, with 2 alternates.  We typically announce at the end of morning session, who is needed back for the evening sessions.  In the finals, a swimmer can advance within their heat but not place higher or lower than the heat they qualified into.

Is my swimmer in the Open or Championship sessions?

There are limits on how many individual swimmers and relays we are allowed to submit for each event.  The coaches will decide which swimmers will swim open vs. championship events.  Typically, the fastest 3 swimmers in an event will swim the championship and the other swimmers will swim in the open session.

  1. SWIMMER LOGISTICS
  • Our event space this year will be inside the special events center as it was last year. See the accompanying layout for where our space is.  There is no fencing around our space so it will be marked with tape and swimmers will need to be respectful of those “walls”.
  • We will have limited access to power in the team space, so please plan accordingly.
  • We will coordinate some limited snacks for the swimmers and meals for our coaches on Thursday.
  • We will bring a table for snacks, but each swimmer should bring their own chair or towel to sit on.
  • There is a team parade at the start of the finals session on Saturday evening.  Our team theme this year will be Hawaii Five-O / Hawaiian Luau (we will have some leis and sunglasses leftover from last year for the swimmers that want them) so start thinking about your swimmer’s costumes for the parade (Swimmers do not need to be swimming in finals to participate in the parade) We will also be able to decorate our tent space with our theme.
  • Swimmers will need to watch the event listing and head to clerk of course when called, as we have been practicing in our dual meets. Swimmers who are 13 and older, will skip clerk of course and go directly to the blocks (THIS IS NEW – Tell your older swimmers!!)
  • For the Thursday afternoon session, and the evening final sessions – all swimmers will meet at the team space, then head onto deck and spend the whole session on deck. They will need to bring their gear with them and their own snacks/drinks for this session.
  • All of the swimmers competing in a 25 yard event, will be diving off the bulkhead and swimming to the wall.
  • The training pool will be available at times for mid-session cool downs and warm-ups
  • The coaches will also review all of this with the swimmers during the practices leading up to City Meet
  1. VOLUNTEERS

Each team is required to provide a certain number of volunteers and we are assigned the roles.  There are penalties for our team if we do not provide them.  Regardless of your role, you WILL be able to go inside and watch your swimmer.  This year the Cardinal is responsible for providing the following:

Please use this signup genius to volunteer – https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0e4bafae2fa7f85-city#/

  • Stroke & turn certified officials will be contacted directly by the CSA, if needed and will need to complete a registration form
  • 3 timers for lane 2, scoreboard side, at 2 morning sessions (Thursday AM & Friday AM)
  • 3 people to man the information booth on all 3 days, for all sessions (this is a better gig than parking duty!)
  • 2 tent parents for Thursday, Friday & Saturday morning sessions
  • 2 clerk of course just for our team to help the coaches get kids to their events for all Thursday, Friday & Saturday morning sessions
  • We will also ask for volunteers to help provide/organize the snacks & meals, and supplies for the tent (This does not count as volunteering for the meet)

Volunteer Arrival Times:

  • Timers – There is a timer meeting 20 minutes before the event starts in the hallway, plan to be at the pool 30 minutes ahead of time
  • Info Booth – Usually opens before the meet starts, so please plan to be at the pool an hour before the meet starts (Bring a chair, water & snacks)
  • Clerk of Course – They will start calling events 30 minutes ahead of time, so please plan to be at our team space 45 minutes ahead of time
  • “Tent” parents – Kids will be coming back from warmups 30ish minutes before the meet starts, so please plan to be at our team space 30 minutes ahead of time (Bring a chair, water & snacks)
  1. OTHER
  • The CSA stressed that this year the focus is on sportsmanship more than anything else, please share that message with your swimmers
  • All the COVID related restrictions have been lifted related to attendance numbers and masking
  • Parking typically costs $5/car each day or $12 for the 3-day event (we recommend carpooling if you can)
  • Food Drive – every year at City Meet, there is a food drive for Urban Ministry so we will start collecting cans at the pool this week from members and guests. Prizes are drawn for people that donate.  Please bring canned goods only. Team members can also bring their donations directly to City Meet.  Please spread the word.
  • We are not allowed to make changes to the entries after they are submitted Sunday July 2nd
  • The locker rooms are setup for Safe Sport, which means for swimmers only. They will be monitored to make sure no adults enter.  There are separate restrooms available for adults.  For parents of younger swimmers, feel free to grab one of the older swimmers or volunteer coaches to bring your swimmer through if they are not sure where to go.
  • Your swimmer should bring:
    • Towel(s)
    • Cap
    • Goggles
    • Team shirt & Suit
    • Water bottle/snacks if needed
    • Chair or sleeping bag (The floor is hard)
    • Sweatshirt/Parka as the water in the pool is cold
    • Spares of anything
    • Games to pass the time (optional)
    • Listening ears and a good attitude ????
