Welcome to the Cardinal Junior Tennis Programs!! 

We offer a comprehensive junior tennis program for ages 5-18 based on not only age but ability.  We use a “progression” technique for tennis balls in order to enhance the learning for the kids. The use of this variable-colored ball progression allows the kids to learn more rapidly and enjoy the game quicker.

The “ROGY” progression uses the following pathway…

Description of Groups:

“Future Ballers / RED BALL”: Beginner: Ages 5-8

This program is designed for young new beginners who want to have exposure to tennis. The class is a fun-filled introduction to tennis utilizing eye-hand and motor skills games and activities. Foam tennis balls, and other teaching aids are used to facilitate the players learning.

  • Kids ages 5-8 in our “FUTURE BALLERS” will use 36′ courts
  • 75 % Red / Yellow low compression felt USTA approved ball
  • Progression instruction, eye-hand development, skill building & FUN!!
  • Rackets size: Up to 23” (Coach will advise on this)
  • Rackets available for purchase in the pro shop

“10U Ballers / ORANGE BALL”: Ages 8-10

This program is designed for the 10 & under player who has had no experience, little to some experience playing or “clinicing” already. They will use low compression orange balls, with up to 25” rackets on a 60-foot court.  Activities focus on athletic development (agility, balance, coordination, speed & reaction) to develop the on-court skills needed to serve, rally and score. These juniors will also be looking to participate in the Greensboro Gate City Junior League and match play.  These players will recap on previous skills of grips, rallying, serving and moving. 

  • Kids ages 8-10 in our “QUICKSTART BALLERS” will use 60′ courts
  • 50% Orange / Yellow low compression felt USTA approved ball This group will focus on getting the players to rally, point play and developing their overall tennis game.
  • Practices will consist of warm-up, match play, match play assistance, instruction and rules & regulations for the QuickStart format.
  • Rackets size: Up to 25” (Coach will advise on this)

“Future Stars / GREEN DOT BALL”: Ages 11-14

This program is designed for juniors aged 11-14 looking to learn the game of tennis and transition to the Greensboro Gate City Junior League and match play.  These players are continuing to develop their athletic skills, while learning or refining the skills necessary to serve, rally and score on the 78-foot court.  Players are developing the ability to rally and play points with serve while maintaining their basic technique.  Our junior players will enjoy learning the game in having fun and developing strokes and fundamentals that will last them a lifetime!! The players will learn and continue learning strokes & technique through drills and point play.

  • Kids ages 10-14 in our “FUTURE STARS” will use standard 78′ courts
  • 25% Green dot low compression felt USTA approved ball
  • Rackets size: Up to 27” (Full-size adult racket) (Coach will advise on this)

“Future Academy / YELLOW or REGULAR BALL”: Ages 12-16

This program is designed for juniors aged 13-16 looking to advance their knowledge of the game through drilling techniques and increased match play to better prepare them for Greensboro Gate City Junior League.  These players are transitioning from our “Future Stars” / Green Dot program into using the regular ball.  The players will already have knowledge of strokes, technique and point play but these will be improved upon and advanced.  This is not a beginner level program.

Kids ages 12-16 in our “FUTURE ACADEMY” will use standard 78′ courts

  • Regular compression felt USTA approved ball
  • Rackets size: 27” (Full-size racket – Coach will advise on this)

“ACADEMY”: Ages 13-18

The Cardinal Junior Tennis Academy (CJTA) at Cardinal Swim & Tennis will offer junior players USPTA & USTA approved instruction that is FUN, ENCOURAGING and EXCITING.  This program is designed for players looking to play UTR, USTA tournaments, high school or at the college level.  Training sessions will involve stroke production, fitness and point play.

Kids ages 13-18 in our “ACADEMY” will use standard 78′ courts

  • Regular compression felt USTA approved ball
  • Rackets size: 27” (Full-size racket – Coach will advise on this)
